As I drank my Friday evening glass of wine and commented on my first time trying the brand, my husband said “why don’t you review wines on your blog”? I’m in NO WAY a professional wine connoisseur, or whatever they’re called, but I know what I like.

I’ve decided to rate wines on the characteristics that are important to me. I’ll rate each category with a rating of 1-5 with 1 being below average or pretty disgusting, and 5 being excellent and delicious. I will rate on taste, cost, fragrance, packaging/label/wine appearance, and overall likeability. I will then calculate the average of each category for an overall score.

So…here goes my first review!

1865 Single Vintage Malbec 2013

1865 Single Vintage Malbec comes from the Vina San Pedro (San Pedro Vinyard) which was founded by the Correa Albano brothers of Chile in 1865. San Pedro exports wines in over 80 markets on 5 continents. I found my bottle in La Plata, MD. 🙂

Packaging – 4

The packaging of this wine really stood out on the shelf. It was wrapped in a paper tissue bag labeled with “1865”, which made it look expensive! The color was a deep, dark purple hue.

Cost – 4

The cost was average at $21.99. The wines I usually buy range from $6 – $20 (blush)…

Fragrance – 3

The initial fragrance was pleasant. Berry with notes of vanilla. After letting the glass sit for about a half hour, it had a very “woody” smell. Woody in this case does not mean pleasant.

Taste – 3

The 1865 has a sharp, acidic taste. There are notes of fruit, berry and vanilla, but its followed by an astringent feel that dried the back of my tongue. It’s not totally terrible, but not as smooth as the packaging made me hope.

Overall likeability – 3

The wine is drinkable, and I will finish the bottle (cuz Lord knows I’m not wasting wine). But, it’s not one that I would buy again. Unless, of course I was having a party because some people like a nasty acidic taste in red wine.

Rating 3.4 out of 5
