I went to the farmers market yesterday afternoon. It was beautiful outside, 70 degrees and sunny, but I was cold. I felt a tiny bit odd all wrapped up while everyone else was in t-shirts and shorts, but this is me… always chilly. If I’m hot, it’s HOT.

When I got home, I made myself a cup of ginger tea. I drink this tea when I’m cold because the ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric are warming herbs and spices. This tea is also great for colds and flu because the ginger is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic (has pain relieving properties). The cinnamon is antibacterial, and the turmeric is all of the above including antiviral.

Warming Ginger Tea

4 cups water

2″ of ginger (about 3 tablespoons)

1/4 teaspoon turmeric

1 1/2 cinnamon sticks

2 wedges of lemon

Honey, sugar, or other sweetener (optional)

Assemble ingredients.

Cut about 2″ of ginger. Ginger should be smooth and shiny, not dark and wrinkly.

Peel and chop ginger. I usually grate it, but I didn’t feel like it. 🙂

Measure out 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric.

Break a cinnamon stick in half. You an use the whole stick if you’d like.

Add water, ginger, turmeric, and cinnmon to a large saucepan. If you want, you can add a pinch of black pepper. Black pepper helps your body absorb the turmeric and is also warming.

Bring to a boil.

Cover lightly and turn down the heat to simmer for 20 minutes.

Cut lemon into 8 wedges.

Ladle tea into a mug, squeeze in a wedge of lemon, and garnish with a lemon wedge and cinnamon stick. If you like your tea sweetened…do so before garnishing.

A little bit of rum makes this even better! Warm up and enjoy!
