About a year ago I was going through a lot of stress. I was having relationship issues, dealing with school, my daughter was starting her freshman year of college, my son his senior year of high school. Work was stressful and my commute was a minimum of 2 hours one way. When I’m stressed, I lose weight. The first part to go…my tiny excuse of a behind.

I was weighing myself almost daily, fearing I was getting too skinny. Every day, it seems another pound was gone. Then it hit me… The brand of scale I was standing on was “Thinner”.

I thought about that horrible movie of the same name. I can’t remember the infraction the main character committed but a curse was put on him. The witch/gypsy pointed her finger and said “thinner”. By the end of the movie, right before he died…well he looked REALLY bad.

I promptly took a razor blade and scraped off the name. A few days later, my weight stabilized and I stopped losing weight. Coincidence? Maybe, but I don’t think the company put that name on the scale for nothing.

It’s not the word itself that has power, but the focus that’s put on it. After each pound I lost, I imagined the back of me looking like an ironing board, which made me look more and more like an ironing board. You remember the old saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me”. They won’t unless you give them power by continuously thinking about them. If you think, “my hair looks like shit everyday”, then guess what? Humidity from hell will come along to help you out.

We have to change our way of thinking in order to change ourselves physically and mentally. Words matter so choose them wisely. ESPECIALLY when speaking to yourself!

  • See! You thought I was making that up!
