My husband surprised me with a “Behind the Scenes” visit at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore for my birthday in December. First stop, Lions Den. We weren’t allowed to take pictures inside the enclosure. When we walked in, there was a low rumble that sounded mechanical. When my daughter started backing up, I realized it was the male lion! There were four others, 3 females and a male. They were excited to see us. Soon, the male calmed and we…

So much for keeping up with my blog, but I have good reason. I have been extremely busy with work, school, and navigating all the activities associated with my daughter’s senior year in high school. Things have been HECTIC! In addition to college applications, searching for scholarships, and finding, buying, and fitting her prom dress, I volunteered to decorate for prom. On January 6th, I started the spring semester of my Therapeutic Herbalism program. One of my courses entitled SOPHIA – School of Philosophy and Healing in Action is an “intensive course … which teaches students to be more self-aware, to develop life skills, and to become adept at navigating personal and professional challenges” (muih.edu). One of my favorite blogs to read is The Peaceful Mom. I usually visit the blog to get help with a weekly meal plan, but Kimberlee is so inspiring with such a good spirit that I often find myself reading lots of her other posts as well. One that caught my eye as I was planning to enter the New Year was her post about choosing an inspired word of the year. This got me thinking…what word would define what…

Stinkhorns occur “naturally” in North America and may result from the “transportation of soil, sod, wood chips, trees, and so on”. This makes sense because I brought in pounds and pounds of soil this past spring for my garden plus we had some pretty hard rain on Wednesday. The…

What IS this?! I happened to look down while watching the dogs play in the yard. I saw the orange color and bent down to get a closer look. What in the world?! Is it a poisonous mushroom? A weird insect cocoon? A fairy pleaser? While I was standing there fly after fly landed on it. I don’t know what it is but this phallic looking thing makes me want to head straight for the chemicals to get my chemical…
